What we promise you

Noodle is made for children, with you in charge. Here's each promise we make, and how you'll see us keep it.

  1. Every question is checked.
    So is every answer.

A dedicated safety model checks what your child asks and what Noodle says back, then your house rules have their say. If something isn't right, your child gets a kind note instead of an answer.

    Kind, never a telling-off

Your grown-ups can see this chat. Noodle is an AI, not a person, and can get things wrong.

    What's my teacher's home address?

    Noodle

That's privateNoodle doesn't share private things about people.

An example: what a child of 6 to 9 sees when a question isn't one for Noodle.

    1. Your limits go in first. Quiet hours, breaks, daily limits and your word list.
    2. The question is checked, and a second check looks for tricks to get round the rules.
    3. Noodle answers at their level: an answer, a hint, a story or a quiz.
    4. The answer is checked before your child sees it.
    5. Every chat is in the Kitchen, your parent dashboard, including answers your child was never shown.

If a safety check can't run, Noodle doesn't guess: your child sees "Noodle's safety check isn't working just now, so nothing was sent. Try again in a minute."

You see every chat,

Every conversation is in your Kitchen, including answers Noodle stopped before your child saw them, and why.

and you're told when it matters.

If a child may be thinking of hurting themselves, or someone may be putting them at risk, such as a stranger online, Noodle answers kindly, points them to Childline and emails you at once, at any hour. Read the chat, then find a quiet moment to talk. Anything else Noodle flags waits for you in the Kitchen.

Up to 3 of these alerts a family a day; after that they wait in the Kitchen. Checks can miss things and email can be delayed: Noodle isn't a monitoring or emergency service.

Open the Kitchen

Urgent emails are on for every grown-up unless they switch theirs off.

There is one message we keep from you, and we explain why below.

Noodle in its bowl, holding a letter sealed with a heart

Theirs to tell

The one thing we keep from you.

If a child says someone at home is hurting them, Noodle answers kindly, tells them to talk to a teacher or Childline today, and tells them that message isn't sent to their grown-ups. A child being hurt at home needs somewhere safe to say so, even when the person hurting them can read the Kitchen.

A message whose safety check couldn't run is kept back too, in case it is one of those. Only that message is kept back: the rest of the chat is in your Kitchen as usual, and because no check is perfect, one of these may still reach you.

  1. No hooks.
    No sneaky tricks.

We could have made Noodle harder to put down: ask your child what they love when they join, then have four topics waiting every time they open it. We chose not to.

Saving a child's interests to pick what they see is profiling, and the Children's Code says it should be off by default. Features that use a child's data to make it hard to stop are, in the ICO's words, "likely to breach" the law's fairness principle.

So what your child asks is never used to pick what they see next, no notification calls them back, and breaks are on by default. Noodle waits to be asked. Thinking of a good question is half of learning to use AI well, so we leave that to them.

  2. Some rules can't be switched off.

Grown-up content is always blocked. A child who's struggling is never turned away.

You choose how Noodle handles things like scary stuff, risky stunts and dares, or the news, for each child. A few rules stay on for every family, whatever the settings: if a child seems to be feeling low, unsafe or hurt, Noodle answers kindly, with Childline's number, and tells you. Father Christmas, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny: some conversations are yours to have. With Keep the magic on, Noodle joins in the fun and leaves the big questions to you.
